Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI)The NFI provides services to clients within the criminal justice chain, such as the Public Prosecution Service and the police. A lawyer in a criminal case may also ask the examining magistrate or the public prosecutor handling the case to have the NFI conduct an examination. In addition, the NFI provides services to other persons or authorities, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service, foreign police or justice authorities, or to special investigative services such as the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) and the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD).
Brochure DNA testingThe DNA Testing (Convicted Persons) Act has been in force since 1 February 2005. Under the Act, persons who have been convicted of an offence for which pre-trial detention may be imposed must provide a compulsory tissue sample.
European arrest warrantThe European Union has adopted a Framework Decision on the European arrest warrant and the surrender procedures between Member States. The decision simplifies and speeds up the procedure, given that the whole political and administrative phase is replaced by a judicial mechanism.
