For many years now, it has been observed that part of the unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMAs) leave their reception centre for an unknown destination. The suspicion is that some of these UMAs have fallen victim to human smuggling and/or international human trafficking. The pilot 'protected reception' started on 1 January 2008, with room for 45 UMAs, divided among five locations, where they only were allowed to leave with prior permission or a staff escort, and where they were coached intensively.
