Use, possession and trading of illigal firearms in the Netherlands (1998-2000)

Summary

The aim of the study is formulated as follows: to provide an insight into the development of the nature and scope of firearms crime in the Netherlands during the period 1998- 2000, in which it will be necessary to record the possession and use of firearms, as well as domestic trading. The following questions must be answered:

  1. What is the estimated scope of illegal firearm use in the Netherlands? Who are the users and what are they using the weapons for?

  2. What is the estimated scope of illegal possession of firearms in the Netherlands? Who are the people who possess these firearms (backgrounds) and how do they obtain them?

  3. What is the estimated scope of illegal firearm trading in the Netherlands? Who are the dealers and how are the weapons being traded?

On the basis of these questions, it is possible to divide the study into two parts. The first part deals with quantitative questions, namely regarding the scope of the use and possession of firearms as well as regarding the extent to which firearms are being traded. The aim of the second part of the study is to provide answers to qualitative questions, namely in relation to the backgrounds of those who use and possess firearms.
