Conversions and revocations of conditional orders for forensic psychiatric patients

Conversions and revocations of conditional orders for forensic psychiatric patients

What factors contribute to success and failure? (full text only available in Dutch)

Summary

In the Netherlands, individuals with a mental disorder who have committed a serious crime, can be sentenced to terbeschikkingstelling (the TBS order, or dis- posal to be treated on behalf of the state). Upon sentencing the TBS order, there are two possibilities. Either the judge choses a conditional TBS order, in which the patient is obliged to abide by certain conditions and (usually) resides in the com-munity, or the patient is sentenced to an unconditional TBS order with mandatory inpatient treatment in a closed forensic psychiatric hospital. The goal of this study was: to describe and analyze 1) the number of conversions and revocations and 2) the factors that are related to conversions and revocations.
